How to read used book listings

The used book business uses some common terms that may not always be clear to customers. Here is a simple glossary of words and their meanings that you will encounter as you use the inventory listings on the web:

Wrappers: covers of a softcover or paperback book.

Dust Jacket (Hardcover): the paper wraparound that covers the book.

Trade: a softcover book that is larger than the standard "pocket"-sized edition.

Fair Condition: a readable copy with all of its pages (unless otherwise specified) but with extensive signs of use.

Good Condition (Paperback): a clean, intact copy but may have usage lines on the spine or the wrappers.

Good Condition (Hardcover): a clean, intact copy with flaws as described. There is a separate description of the dust jacket and the book itself. So you could have a "good" copy of the book with a "fair" dust jacket, or any other combination.

Very Good to Near Fine Condition: the book has been read but its previous owner looked after it well.

Fine: No defects, little usage. Older books may have minor flaws.
